Introduction
Safety is of paramount importance to us at OPC. We have invested heavily in the development of a comprehensive safety system to ensure our clients have opportunities to experience the great New Zealand outdoors without being exposed to avoidable risks. It is important to us that you have all of the information you need to make an informed decision about taking part in a programme at OPC and we hope this section of our website will provide that.
OPC’s safety systems have been developed over almost 40 years of working with young people in the outdoors. Over the past three years, OPC has fully redeveloped all of these systems and we are proud to share these with you.
Our goals for this review were to:
- Align and streamline all of our safety systems to make them more user friendly - Clarify and clearly communicate safety standards across all pursuits - Highlight those factors most likely to lead to serious harm - Increase the focus on crisis prevention and pre-planning for crisis management - Enhance instructor management and support systems - Meet current legislative requirements - Develop a strong, conservative safety culture
Follow the links above to read more about our new safety system. The key element of this system is the document entitled “Fundamental Principles of Safety Management at OPC”, covering the ten key categories for consideration of safety matters. The three tiers of our safety system are: - Tier One - Fundamental Principles of Safety Management - Tier Two – Activity Handbooks - Tier Three – Activity Management Plans
These elements are all covered in this section of our website, and further detail will be added over time. Our objective is to provide a detailed explanation of our safety system, covering all levels from the principles of the system to the day-to-day practices. This will enable people to become aware of the quality and extent of our system, and also give confidence to customers and potential customers in relation to our management of risk in the outdoors. It also will allow for industry input and collaboration as we look to work with the outdoor industry in establishing and maintaining industry best practice to the benefit of us all.
