Skills Courses

Skills Development

For those wanting to recreate safely in the outdoors, we develop programmes that will take you to the next skill level, novice – intermediate – advanced. Programmes can be developed for a broad cross section of outdoor pursuits. These include rock climbing, mountaineering, white water kayaking, sea kayaking, navigation and sailing. The programmes are run by passionate outdoor instructors who want to pass on their skills in a fun and inspirational way.

These programmes will help ensure you can safely recreate in the outdoors and enjoy the amazing environment we have here in New Zealand. Our programmes are run from either OPC Tongariro or OPC Great Barrier. Get a group of people together and we will do the rest. You may also wish to check out our individual courses we run for students during the holiday periods.

OPC can take you through a Rock Skills Course that will be appropriate to your abilities and experience level while challenging you and developing new skills.

In the midst of a World Heritage area, the Central Plateau offers superb and challenging rock climbing. Imagine hanging off sheer volcanic rock faces next to the dormant Mt Ngauruhoe in the dramatic Mangatepopo Valley, or watching the sunset over Mt Taranaki while packing up your gear from a fulfilling day climbing the crags up Mt Ruapehu. Further afield you could experience Whanganui Bay, a highly rated five star rock climbing crag on the edge of the majestic Lake Taupo, or the more easily accessible sport climbing areas of Wharepapa and Froggat Edge.

The intrinsic rewards that come from combining concentration, agility, balance, strength and judgment are unequalled in any other sport. Whatever standard you rock climb at, from novice to expert, these feelings remain the same. The key lies in seeking out new and exciting challenges.

If you aspire to learn the skills of Rock Climbing or to broaden your existing skill base, OPC can implement a course that will achieve your goals. We have experienced, passionate NZOIA-qualified instructors who have climbed in areas around the globe. At a 1:4 ratio, the instructors personalised climbing instruction makes learning enjoyable and challenging, no matter your level.
